a beautiful baby girl, caught by her father in a virtually unassisted (but not unattended) birth.

fourth baby, first girl. 8lbs 6oz. placenta detached rather soon after the birth, but even after mom requested cord traction, didn't arrive until over an hour after the birth. this is not atypical of our births - we usually do not rush the placenta. alot of clotting built up behind the placenta and we estimated mom's blood loss to be around 6 cups.

it's always a drag to feel like you've been hit by a truck after birth - especially when the birth was smooth and rather quick. mom is doing additional iron and taking it easy. some women still feel bad even weeks after the birth when that much blood is lost. I've had a few clients get blood transfusions and feel so much better immediately.

suriya's mother had originally planned an unassisted birth but then had a strong feeling that she wanted a hands-off birth experience with a midwife attending mid-pregnancy. I hope that we offered her the space she needed to birth as she wanted, while giving her only what she did want.
