Rixa has an amazing, honest and accurate response to the recent ACOG press release on homebirth.
She says it much more succinctly than I ever could.
While I wouldn't expect them to say anything differently, the patronizing tone of the release (that somehow a mother just wants a candlelit romantic experience and cares little for her health or that of her baby's) really disappointed me.
We are part of a large, successful, truth-seeking movement...proved specifically by the defensiveness of this release.
A response to the fellows

I'll be very interested to see what effect, if any, this has on obstetrics in New Zealand, probably not a lot because they are already anti homebirth.
I'm thankful that there are women like you who work with women like me to have safe homebirths that also have some of that romantic aspect. The best of both worlds!
Rixa's response is very smart. And I agree and feel totally with you: the substance of the statement is not nearly as disappointing as the tone. I would not in my wildest dreams imagine that ACOG would announce a full endorsement to home birth any time soon. I am even pleasantly surprised (puzzled, in fact) that they mention freestanding birth centers favorably. But the tone! That condescending, scolding, judgmental, patronizing tone! How's THAT for unnecessary?! I am not familiar with the drafting process, I don't know how big their P.R. department is, but I imagine they have professionals there who know how to weigh every nuance and consider each phrase. They purposefully chose this language. This is the image they intend to project. They really do not want us women to worry our silly little heads about all these decisions. Shame on them.
